The Mammoth Site, Hot Springs, SD

The Mammoth Site is an incredible visitors center with a tour of the active dig site where hundreds of mammoths and many other animals met their deaths over 300-700 years, approximately 15000 years ago.

The guided tour was very informative and we were left to continue walking around the pit at our leisure. Then we went through an exhibit and down to the fossil preparation lab.

This was a wonderful experience for $10 each and truly a hidden gem of the Black Hills experience. We would not have known about it except the Badlands visitor center mentioned it. The signage and facility are very understated. They have a junior digging program for kids 4-13. We will definitely be signing Corbin up when he’s old enough, what a unique experience!
